Hello friends,

Today I’m comparing Too Faced’s Better Than Sex mascara to Makeup Revolution’s The Mascara Revolution. I have no idea if the Revolution mascara is meant to be a dupe, but after using them both they seem quite similar to me.

I intend to run this “vs” blog as a series, so keep your eyes peeled for dupes or similar items, and let me know if you think of any you’d like to see!

I’m going to compare the price point, the packaging, the quantity and the quality of the product, and give each section a mark out of 5, and then take an overall average.

Price Point

Too Faced - £22.00, available at Boots

Revolution - £8.00, available at Superdrug

Both mascaras are available as waterproof versions as well, and I find that waterproof mascaras tend to last longer for me, especially because I get watery eyes with hayfever! However, it was a bit silly of me to get both of these in the normal versions… at least my Too Faced is a mini!

Score for Price:

Too Faced: 1 / 5

Revolution: 4 / 5

Spending more than £12 on mascara is needlessly excessive, in my very broke opinion.

Packaging

There is nothing overly outstanding about the packaging for either of these products. Too Faced is a pink tube with black font, and Revolution is a bit more appealing with a rose gold tube and black font. The font does rub off a bit more quickly on The Mascara Revolution, but it’s nothing different to any other drugstore mascara I’ve tried.

For the waterproof versions, the Better Than Sex is in a turquoise tube and The Mascara Revolution is in a black tube with rose gold font.

Both products boast volume and hold, and so they have big brushes. Too Faced wins here for ease of application, because the brush picks up less product but enables the user to build up for a fuller effect. The Mascara Revolution tube can barely contain the amount of product and consequently there ends up being a fair bit of waste. To try and combat this, I tend to wipe the brush over the top of the tube to stuff more product back in when I replace the brush, but the downside to this is that my tube is now covered in mascara and looks disgusting!

I have leaned towards using The Mascara Revolution as a volumising mascara over the top of a lengthening and defining mascara (I’ve previously used Nyx’s Worth The Hype and I’m currently using Catrice Cosmetic’s Eyeconista Lash Millionizer for this purpose), I don’t think I’d trust the mascara alone to last all day. Check back later in the article to see my all-day wear test thoughts!

Score for Packaging:

Too Faced: 4 / 5

Revolution: 2 / 5

Too Faced is marked at 4 because the packaging is sturdy and what it needs to be, but quite boring. Revolution scored 2 because although the packaging isn’t enough for the product, there is a theme between the normal and the waterproof version and the tube is quite pretty before it’s opened and chaos ensues.

Quantity

Too Faced’s Better Than Sex comes with 8ml of product, which seems to be on the lower end of the average tube size.

I can’t find anywhere online to tell me how much product comes in the Revolution version (and half the info has rubbed off on mine) but there is a LOT of product in that tube! In fact, it spills out even from the first use, and I have to wipe the brush before applying the product. At a guess, I think it’s a 10ml tube with more product contained inside.

Score for Quantity:

Too Faced: 3 / 5

Revolution: 4 / 5

Quality

After being ill for several days, I decided to be extremely mean and apply each mascara to one eye and see how it lasts when my eyes are streaming and I have a slight fever. On top of that, I’m at work in an office environment. This is slightly less harsh than my plan of trying each mascara before a session of netball and followed by a shower, although my eyes are very dry and itchy and I keep catching myself trying to rub them!

Please excuse the state of my eyebrows, they desperately need fixing! This was after curling the lashes but before applying mascara.

For quality, I want to look at how much wear I get out of a product before it starts breaking down or comes off, as well as the ease or difficulty of application.

The application was much better for Revolution, and the brush separated the lashes nicely and evenly. Too Faced had a slight issue where some of the lashes sort of tangled together - it wasn’t clumpy, it just didn’t apply as nicely as the other side. I used two coats on each eye, and before that just a quick swipe of eyeshadow and curled the lashes as I normally would, followed by setting spray.

Revolution left, Too Faced right

Both products have come off the lower lashes by the end of the day, but seem to have not budged from the top lashes. The Too Faced side seems to have sorted itself out over the day too, so I think that must have just been me and not the mascara at fault.

Score for Quality:

Too Faced: 4 / 5

Revolution: 4 / 5

OVERALL SCORES:

Too Faced Better Than Sex: 12 / 20

Revolution The Mascara Revolution: 14 / 20

I was very surprised by this result, I was sure that going in I'd prefer the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara! It's not a bad mascara, but the biggest issue here is the price point for the quality of the product. Makeup Revolution's The Mascara Revolution costs less than half the price, comes with more product and is of similar quality.
